Celebrating life and colour WITH GAIL EDMONDS

Artist, Gail Edmonds, is one of many talented female artists that regularly exhibit at Aashiya Gallery in Drummoyne. The recipient of countless art awards and accolades, Gail will launch her latest works, celebrating life in all its glorious colours, at the gallery on Saturday 4th February. Here's what she had to say about her inspiration, career thus far and the art industry…

What is the inspiration for your art works?

I am inspired by abstract concepts translated onto canvas, this style is not restrictive and lots of fun as it allows for emotional fluidity and freedom to use any colours and style. I am also inspired by the colours, textures and atmosphere of the arid landscape in Australia as well as the industrial; both symbols of hope and hopelessness, both interpreted in terms of beauty and austerity.

How did you first start out in the art industry?

I firstly studied Art History with Dr Gary Darby through numerous Macquarie University Education Courses, subsequently fell in love with art and was inspired to try painting myself! I began 21 years ago by joining a group of artists for weekly art sessions, which continue to this day in a Castle Hill Studio! Since then I have studied in Spain and Italy and have been attending Ku-ring-gai Art Centre for many years, doing Life Drawing and Mixed media courses.

What advice do you have for struggling artists who would like to make a successful career out of their creative hobby?

I am afraid for most artists it is a continual struggle, selling paintings is difficult. My advice is to persevere, believe in yourself, keep attending art classes and enter into as many art shows as possible.

What do you do if you're half way through an art work and you don't like how it's coming along?

Do not try and fix it there and then – it won't work! Come back to it in a couple of days and you will have a different perspective.

Can you tell us a bit about your upcoming exhibition at Aashiya Gallery?

It is a joyous and colourful celebration of life. Works are acrylic abstracts on canvas. Themes include outback Australia, music and the industrial, as well as the beauty of colour – seen in my work "Chakra." My upcoming exhibition opening is on Saturday 4th February at 1pm. Everyone is welcome and you can RSVP to Louise at the gallery: info@aashiya.com.au.
