Jucy - New DVD Release

Amazing to think that somewhere in the world (Brisbane) an "alternative" video store still exists! Best buddies Jackie (Cindy Nelson) and Lucy (Francesca Gasteen) run the shop in Louise Alston's polished and very smart "womance." Stung by the suspicion that they are weird and lesbian to boot, the women embark on a desperate hunt for a proper job and a straight bloke, which both centre around an inner city local theatre and a hunky lead actor. It's funny and frisky, perhaps too "out there" for our cautious art-house distributors, for inexplicably, this didn't get a cinema release last year. Shame, as both the zesty script and especially the fabulous performances of the two lead actors would have been a gust of fresh air on local screens. Great soundtrack too, check the trailer at www.jucythemovie.com. M15+ out now on DVD. Thanks to Odin's Eye Entertainment we have 3 copies of the DVD to give away info@ciaomagazine.com.au

Young Adult - New Cinema Release

Director Jason Reitman and writer Diablo Cody are the creative bright-sparks who gave us Juno, and at first glance, it's tempting to think Mavis Gary (Charlize Theron) is Ellen Page all grown up and gone to seed. She's in her mid 30s, the ghost writer of a series of YA novels, and is lost in swamp of booze, meaningless sex and world weary cynicism. She has plenty of the younger teen's smart-ass wit, and her sharp tounge crackles with tart one liners. It's quite a performance, but despite the laughs, this is a much darker movie than Juno. Mavis has decided (for no apparent good reason) to return to her prom queen glory days in a small sububan town and break up the marriage of her old flame Buddy (Patrick Wilson). An encounter with the film's "conscience," a geeky former classmate (Patton Oswalt), equally damaged by his school days offers at least the hope Mavis will learn something, and a conventional redemption of sorts will occur. But there's nothing conventional about Cody's script – it's far trickier and more satisfying than that. MA 15+ at Dendy Newtown and Hoyts Broadway from Jan 19. Thanks to Paramount Films, we have 10 double passes to give away info@ciaomagazine.com.au
